Brief Introduction to Species
The Sun Conure (Aratinga solstitialis) is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Native to northeastern South America, their plumage is a stunning gradient of brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds, accented by deep green and blue wing feathers. These medium-sized parrots are famous for their fiery personalities and deep devotion to their owners. While they are known for their volume, those who live with "Sunnies" will tell you that their affectionate, playful, and clingy nature makes every loud call worth it.
Fast Facts
Housing Requirements
Sun Conures are incredibly active and spend a great deal of time climbing and playing with toys.
-
Cage Size: Minimum 60cm x 60cm x 90cm. Because they are so active, they will utilise every inch of space, so go as large as your room allows.
-
Bar Spacing: 1.6cm to 2cm is the safe range.
-
Location: They are social "velcro" birds. Place their cage in a central area of the home where they can see the action. However, avoid placing them right next to a shared wall if you have sensitive neighbours!
Diet & Nutrition
Sun Conures require a nutrient-dense diet to maintain those glowing, vibrant feathers.
-
The Staple: 70% high-quality pellets.
-
Vitamin A & Calcium: These are crucial for Conures. Feed plenty of dark leafy greens, carrots, and red capsicum.
-
Fruit: They have a sweet tooth! Offer small portions of papaya, mango, and berries as treats.
-
Avoid: Stick to the "no" list: no avocado, chocolate, onion, or high-sugar processed foods.
Health & Wellness
Sunnies are generally robust, but their health is often tied to their emotional state.
-
Common Issues: Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD), Psittacosis, and feather picking if they feel neglected or bored.
-
Metabolic Issues: Like many parrots, they can be prone to obesity if their diet is too seed-heavy.
-
Warning Signs: A "fluffed up" bird, a change in their scream (or sudden silence), or a lack of interest in their favourite treats are all signs of potential illness.
Training & Socialisation
Sun Conures live for physical affection and interaction.
-
The Cuddle Factor: Most Sunnies love to snuggle under their owner's chin or inside a hoodie. This makes them wonderful companions but can lead to "separation anxiety" if they aren't taught to play independently.
-
Noise Management: You cannot train a Sun Conure to be silent—it is part of their biology. However, you can reward quiet behaviour and avoid "shouting back," which they interpret as you joining in the flock call.
-
Tricks: They are very smart and can easily learn to wave, turn around, and fetch small items.
Enrichment & Exercise
-
Sound and Light: They love stimulation. Many Sunnies enjoy watching cartoons or listening to upbeat music when you aren't home.
-
Shredders: They are "beak-busy" birds. Provide plenty of balsa wood, bird-safe leather, and cardboard.
-
Flight Time: They are agile flyers. Ensure they have several hours of out-of-cage time daily to burn off their high energy levels and keep their weight in check.
Grooming & Hygiene
-
Sunbathing: Where possible, provide safe access to natural sunlight (not through a window) or a UV bird lamp. This helps them synthesise Vitamin D and keeps their colours vibrant.
-
Bathing: They are enthusiastic bathers! A shallow dish of water or a misting spray will be met with much wing-flapping and excitement.
-
General Cleaning: They can be messy eaters, often soaking their food in their water dish ("making soup"). Change their water at least twice a day and clean the cage floor daily.
